Sanborn Field is the oldest agricultural experiment field west of the Mississippi River. The site was selected in 1888 and is named for Dr. J.W. Sanborn, former director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University. Sanborn Field is the site where the organism streptomyces aureofaciens, the source of the drug Aureomycin, was first found in a soil sample. Today the field is used for a variety of purposes including demonstration, teaching and research. Sanborn Field was designated as a Registered National Historic Landmark in 1965.
