Working with layers and map contents

A map layer is a collection of categorized features shown on the map, such as roads, sidewalks or a bus stops.

Using the Map Contents and Legend panel, you can view the list of layers in the map, turn the layers on and off in the map display, and examine the symbols for layers.

To examine the map contents:

  • Click the plus button next to an item to expand an item. If the item is a collection of grouped layers, this will expand the group to show the layers in that group.
  • The check-box next to the layer indicates whether the layer is currently visible in the map.
  • You can click the check-box next to the layer name to turn the layer on or off. The map automatically redraws to reflect the changes in layer visibility.
  • Some layers may not be visible at the current map scale (zoom level). This is indicated by a checkbox that is grayed out: Scale-dependent visibility You may need to zoom the map in or out to see a particular layer displayed.
  • If layers have a plus button next to the name, you can expand the layer to display the symbol assigned to that layer. Some layers have multiple symbols according to categories contained within that layer.
